Law firm Harneys has been drumming up business in Asia.

Lawyers from the Bermuda office of the international firm this week delivered a series of seminars in Hong Kong designed to highlight services offered on the island.

Sarah-Jane Hurrion, managing partner of Harney’s Bermuda, which launched just six months ago, said: “This is an ideal time to reinforce messages about Bermuda’s position in the world’s largest captive domicile and one of the top three reinsurance centres worldwide.

“Harneys is pleased to be part of the effort to enhance Bermuda’s reputation and bring business to the island and continue to build a leading full-service legal and fiduciary practice here.”

Ms Hurrion lead a team including Michael Burns, the head of corporate and fiduciary and Stuart Old, a director, in delivering talks on Bermuda’s role in the international economy and the island’s reputation in the reinsurance, captives and insurance-linked securities markets.

The Bermuda arm of the firm also hosted a Bermuda-themed night and handed out copies of its text book on Bermuda commercial law, published by Thomson Reuters.

Harneys had grown to become one of the largest offshore legal firms in Hong Kong and also has outposts in Singapore, Tokyo and Shanghai.

The firm has just hired ILS and insurance and reinsurance specialist Michael Skrbic in Bermuda, who has considerable experience of Asian financial institutions, while Bermudian lawyer Lilla Zuill has been seconded to Hong Kong.

Harneys now has 22 staff on the island, nine of them lawyers, and is expected to announce further appointments in the near future.
