Bacardi touts Martini’s green credentials

Green energy: Martini, one of the brands owned by Bacardi, has its Italy facility powered almost entirely by renewable energy sources, including hydropower

Marking World Water Day, Bermudian-based Bacardi has highlighted the water-driven, green energy efforts of one of its leading brands, Martini.

Since 2010, nearly all the electricity consumed at the Martini facility near Turin, Italy, has been generated from renewable sources, including hydropower.

Water from the Italian Alps is the resource for the hydroelectric power used at the drinks facility in the village of Pessione.

“Hydropower — the production of electrical power through the use of falling or flowing water — is one of the cleanest ways to produce electricity without significant impact to the environment,” said Fulvio Baratella, technical service manager in charge of environmental engineering at the Martini facility.

Giorgio Castagnotti, operations director at the Pessione site, said: “With the use of renewable energy, we have cut greenhouse gas emissions for the brand by more than 40 per cent, equivalent to removing more than 800 cars from the highway.

“In addition to the more than 40 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2006, Martini has saved 100,000 of its cork stoppers from going to landfills by reusing them for natural decorations and green building.”
