Bermuda-based employees of international insurance and reinsurance company Axa XL worked on 11 projects for the benefit of non-profit organisations on the island as part of the company’s annual global day of giving.

Axa XL staff worldwide worked on more than 300 projects in some 70 locations.

In Bermuda, the projects were:

• Carter House in St David’s: cutting back trees, removing invasive plants, pulling up weeds in the surrounding area, general landscaping and cleaning up the “outbuilding”.

• Trunk Island: planting trees, culling invasive plants, and working on trail maintenance.

• Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy: power-washing the playground and equipment and assisting with the making of teaching aids.

• Victor Scott Primary School: sorting books in the school’s library and teachers’ reading resources room.

• The Reading Clinic: creating maths kits for tutors and painting the resource room.

• Pals: sorting and organising clothing and shoes at Pals’ thrift shop on Point Finger Road.

• Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre: helping with preparations for the upcoming Relay for Life fundraiser (May 17 and 18), which included preparing team packages, counting wrist bands, t-shirts and gift bags for all registered teams.

• Meals on Wheels: cooking, preparing, and packaging meals for seniors in need and cleaning up the Meals on Wheels facility.

• Eliza DoLittle Society: organising the charity’s food bank and cleaning and organising the office.

• Lorraine Rest Home: painting, cleaning, gardening, and entertaining the elderly at the home.

• National Museum of Bermuda: continuing pre-restoration work at Casemates Barracks, including clearing away invasive plants and ramparts.

Patrick Tannock, who chairs Axa XL’s Bermuda-based philanthropic unit, the XL Foundation, and participated in the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre project, said: “This is one of the most rewarding days on our calendar at Axa XL. We respect the vital role that non-profit organisations have in our local communities and on our global day of giving we have the opportunity to collectively connect with these organisations and show our appreciation by physically addressing some of their most basic needs.”
