Seven people will take up head teaching posts in public schools this September.The Education Department yesterday announced the appointment of five new school principals and the transfer of two principals.

The Education Department yesterday announced the appointment of five new school principals and the transfer of two principals.

Veteran teacher Stanfield Smith -- who holds a Masters degree in educational administration and has spent much of his 22-year teaching career at the Berkeley Institute where he is deputy principal -- will become the headmaster of East End Primary.

Mr. Smith replaces Cathy Bassett who will be moving to Elliott Primary.

Mrs. Bassett has worked in education in both the US and Bermuda for the past 20 years. She holds both a Baccalaureate degree in education and a Masters degree with emphasis on elementary, secondary and special education.

Current principal of Elliott Primary, Beverley Daniels will take over the helm of Harrington Sound Primary from retiring Suzette Walters.

Mrs. Daniels, who has headed Elliott for seven years, holds a Masters degree in school administration.

Cricketer Wendell Smith will take over the principalship of Paget Primary from retiring Laverne Lau.

Mr. Smith is the deputy principal of East End Primary. He holds a Masters degree in education leadership and was a member of the Education Planning Team (EPT).

Language Arts Coordinator at Purvis Primary and West End Primary School, Lavern Simons will head up the Heron Bay Primary School.

Mrs. Simons, who replaces retiring principal Alan Leigh, also holds a Masters degree in educational leadership. And in 1995 she received the Sandys Rotary Club Outstanding Teacher Award, having been selected by her peers.

Acting principal at Somerset Primary Evereth Richardson will fill the post formerly held by Kalmar Richards who is one of three deputy head teachers at CedarBridge Academy.

Mrs. Richardson is a 25-year veteran of the school system. She obtained a Masters Degree from the University of Maryland.

Meanwhile, the Board of Trustees of St. George's Preparatory School have appointed Mary Lodge as the principal of the Government aided school.

Mrs. Lodge, another 25-year veteran, is a mentor teacher for the Education Ministry and this summer she will attain a Masters degree in special educational needs.

She replaces retiring principal Mervyn Moorehead.
