Nothing to do in Bermuda?

Most of us are tightening our belts after all that seasonal spending so, luckily for us, Bermuda Tourism are running an initiative to let us dine at many local restaurants for a reduced cost! Over 35 of Bermuda's top restaurants are participating in Bermuda Restaurant Week from Friday, January 17th until Thursday, February 13th. Prices for three-course prix fixe dinners fall into three tiers at $29, $39 or $49 per person (excluding beverages and grats) depending on the participating restaurant. Firm fan of factual films? Then good news as the January edition of the Bermuda Docs Weekend Film Series will be on Sunday, January 19th in the usual location of the Tradewinds Auditorium at BUEI. Let the Fire Burn, an award-winning documentary about an attack by the Philadelphia police on a row house occupied by members of the urban group MOVE will be showing at 3pm. This will be followed by The Last Ocean, award-winning documentary about efforts to protect Earth's last untouched ocean from commercial fishermen, at 5.15pm. Saturday, January 25th is the last Saturday of the month, which means that it's Super Saturday at Masterworks in the Botanical Gardens! Each month has a different theme and this one will be Prince and Princess, where families can participate in free themed arts and craft activities from 10am until 2pm. A stylish start to 2014, the Caledonian Society of Bermuda's Annual Burns Supper, will be at Tucker's Point Hotel and Spa on Saturday, January 25th. A Burns Supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of Scotland's national bard Robert Burns, author of many famous poems and songs. You do NOT have to be a literary buff to enjoy this, you just have to enjoy delicious food with entertaining toasts and speeches. The pre-dinner cocktail reception (cash bar) will be from 6.30pm until 7.15pm, with the five-course dinner beginning at 7.30pm. The ticket price is $100 per person and available from iHind@cityhall.bm or online at www.pTix.bm. Rosewood Tucker's Point are also offering a special room rate of $195 for attendees. The next edition of the Bermuda International Film Festival's BIFFlix Monthly Film Series will be a screening of the film, Blue is the Warmest Colour, starring Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux, on Sunday, January 26th. This film recent made cinema history by being the first to be awarded the Palme d'Or to both its director and its actresses. Ladies, do you think you have what it takes to be the face of Bermuda? The Miss Bermuda Pageant is now in the 4th year since its revival and they are currently looking for contestants for the 2014 edition. The date of the pageant itself has not yet been announced but the deadline for applications is Friday, January 31st. Experience is not required and application forms and more details can be downloaded from the website at www.missbermuda.bm. The registration fee is $100. A great event for Bob Marley fans, Veterans in Action presents Legend: Bob Marley Tribute at the BAA Gymnasium on Saturday, February 8th. Gates open at 8pm and the headliner is Aaron Silk and Friends live from Jamaica, with musical interludes by Jugglin J, Y.G.S., King Jyrus, Prophecy and Magnum Force. Local artists performing Bob Marley covers will include Rivah, Sista Mandy, Shorta Ranks, Djata, Marca T, Kulcha, Zenji San, Shine Hayward, and more. Tickets are $25, or $40 at the door, and available from Kit 'n' Caboodle, Fish 'n' Tings, People's Pharmacy, Jamaican Grill, Caribbean Food Market, Somer Supermarket and Belvin's Variety in Happy Valley and Devonshire.

Young dancers will have the opportunity to take their ballet technique to the next level at Sophia Cannonier's Firebird Half Term Ballet Camp at the Lotus Centre on Victoria Street from Monday, February 17th until Friday, February 21st. Running daily from 8.30am until 5.15pm, 5 to 12 year olds will have a morning classical ballet class followed by pilates, yoga and/or body conditioning. Also included is a Firebird makeup class, ballet films, acting and musical theatre classes, raw nutrition workshops, and etiquette and protocol lessons. This fun week will culminate in a mini performance for parents. The cost is $300 with a $50 sibling discount per additional child.
