Man admits public drunkenness charge

A Devonshire man spotted washing his face with a can of beer admitted a charge of being drunk and incapable in public.

Omar Young, 42, pleaded guilty to the charge and a second of violently resisting arrest during an appearance in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

The court heard that at around 1pm on April 4, a manager at the Maximart in Sandys was told by a customer there was a man outside who was harassing customers and appeared to be drunk.

When the manager looked outside, he saw Young drinking a can of Steel Reserve and using the beer to wash his face. He also heard Young shouting at customers, causing a disturbance.

The manager contacted police and, a short while later, looked outside again and saw Young fighting with another man.

When police arrived on the scene, Young was shouting and ignored orders to calm down and be quiet. The officers attempted to handcuff Young but he pulled his hands away. In an ensuing struggle he grabbed the handcuffs and attempted to pull them away from the officers, leading to both him and police falling to the ground and knocking over a parked motorcycle.

The officers used captor spray on Young, but when that was unsuccessful, they deployed a Taser.

While Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo initially fined Young a total of $800 for the offences, Young asked for the court to consider community service as he was broke and unemployed.

Mr Tokunbo ordered pre-sentencing reports on Young, releasing him on $1,000 bail until the reports are completed. He further ordered that Young stay away from the Maximart premises as a condition of his bail.
