Drunk driver admits guilt over crash

A drunk driver involved in a Pembroke crash on Thursday has been fined and banned from the road.

At 5.50pm, police officers were called to a two-vehicle collision on Happy Valley Road, where they found a Silver Chevrolet and a white Honda, both of which had damage to their fronts.

The fence at a nearby property was also damaged.

Lennie Brown, 37, admitted that he had been involved in the crash and that he did not hold a driving licence to the officers, who also noticed that his breath smelt strongly of alcohol and that his eyes were bloodshot.

When asked if he had been drinking, the defendant from Hamilton Parish replied: “I had two beers.”

After being arrested and cautioned, Brown was taken to Hamilton Police Station, where he gave a breath sample and was formally charged early the next day.

In Magistrates’ Court this morning, the defendant — who has no previous convictions — pleaded guilty to driving while impaired and apologised for his behaviour.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $1,200 and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.

Brown has until May 31 to pay, or will face 100 days in prison in default.
