Warwick driver punished for police chase

A young motorcyclist who led police on a 70kmh chase has been fined $900 and docked 15 points on his driving licence.

At 10.50am on April 1, officers attempted to pull over Makai Jacobs after he turned right onto Camp Hill Road from Middle Road in Warwick.

However the 20-year-old, travelling on a red Honda cycle, looked behind at the police vehicle and then sped off.

A chase ensued, during which time Jacobs was seen steering with one hand and fiddling with his jacket.

Officers lost the defendant after he made a sharp left turn from Tribe Road 6 onto Fork Lane.

However, after noting his licence plate details, they went to Jacobs’ Warwick residence later that same morning and cautioned him.

In Magistrates’ Court this morning, the defendant admitted failing to stop for police and driving without due care and attention.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Jacobs $100 and added five points to his licence for the first offence, along with an $800 fine and 10 points on his licence for the second.

Jacobs has until May 31 to pay, or will face 80 days in prison in default.
