Devonshire woman given conditional discharge

A 21-year-old Devonshire woman has been given a 12-month conditional discharge for assaulting police, obstructing an officer and violently resisting arrest.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court on April 25, Zaire Bean pleaded guilty to the offences that related to an incident in Hamilton on April 23 and a Social Inquiry Report was ordered.

The court heard that Bean was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by police at about 3.20am.

She became aggressive when the officers started questioning the driver, striking one officer in the face, spitting at another and shouting profanities.

Additional officers later arrived on the scene and the situation was brought under control.

In court today, prosecutor Larissa Burges said Bean had expressed remorse for her actions in the Social Inquiry Report.

She added that Bean was out celebrating her birthday and that it was a “really drunk night” that she hardly remembers.

Bean also apologised again and asked the court for leniency, stressing that her behaviour was out of character.

She pointed to some of her achievements, which included being a former Miss Teen Bermuda, as well as an alumni of the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme and Raleigh Bermuda.

“It was just a really senseless night,” she said. “I was stupid, I was senseless. I am eating humble pie right now.”

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe handed her a 12-month conditional discharge in the hope that it would allow her to continue on a positive trajectory.

“You have too much to lose and if this was a momentary lapse of reason and judgment by you on April 23, make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he added.
