A 20-year-old Pembroke woman has admitted assaulting and wounding the father of her two-year-old son.

Shakari Astwood pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court this morning to unlawfully wounding her ex-partner in Warwick on July 15 last year and again on July 30 last year in Paget.

She also admitted unlawfully assaulting him in Warwick on August 8 last year, and unlawfully assaulting him and thereby causing him bodily harm in Paget on August 4 last year.

The court heard that during the first incident, the defendant attacked the complainant with scissors, leaving him with a cut on his left upper arm that required five stitches.

In the second incident, which took place at the complainant’s place of work, the defendant pushed him into a door, causing a laceration that also needed stitches to the right side of his face.

The third incident happened at Astwood’s home, when the she punched the complainant in the back of the head.

In the fourth incident, which again happened at the complainant’s workplace, Astwood hit him in the face and the head, causing undisclosed injuries.

Astwood was later arrested and admitted the offences but maintained that her actions were in self-defence.

In court today, Astwood claimed that she and her ex-partner were in an abusive relationship that had since ended.

She added that the abuse came from both sides, however, according to prosecutor Larissa Burgess, the complainant said he had never assaulted Astwood.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe ordered a Social Inquiry Report and adjourned the matter to August 3 for sentencing.

He released Astwood on $2,000 bail with a like surety on the condition that she have no contact with the complainant.
