Visitor banned from roads for drink-driving

A 25-year-old visitor from the Isle of Man has been fined and banned from the roads for drink-driving.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Callun Wilson pleaded guilty to the offence that took place on Reid Street yesterday.

The Crown offered no evidence on the alternative charge of failing to provide a sample of breath.

The court heard that Wilson was stopped after police officers received a report of a man riding a livery cycle the wrong way down Reid Street.

They noted that his eyes were glazed, he smelled strongly of intoxicants and his speech was slurred.

When asked if he’d been drinking, Wilson, who is staying in Hamilton Parish while in Bermuda, replied that he’d had “a few”.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo handed him a $1,200 fine and banned him from driving for 18 months.

In a separate matter, a 54-year-old Pembroke man was also fined and banned from the roads after he admitted driving dangerously in Pembroke on July 16.

The court heard that police officers were attempting to stop Quinton Francis, who was riding a motorcycle, when he accelerated and fled at a high speed.

Francis proceeded to lead the officers on a chase through Hamilton, failing to stop at several stop signs and eventually losing control of the cycle on Two Way Lane.

Mr Tokunbo handed him a $1,000 fine and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
