A suspected murderer contacted police on the same evening he is alleged to have shot a man at Southampton Rangers Sports Club and told officers he would turn himself in the next day in connection with an unrelated matter, a court has heard.

Shantoine Prinston Burrows first called Detective Sergeant Kenten Trott at 7.10pm on October 23, 2015 — a few hours before he is alleged to have killed Rickai Swan on the porch of the club.

DS Trott told jurors that the phone call was in connection with an “unrelated matter”.

“There were two phone calls that day,” said DS Trott. “The first one at 7.10pm, in that phone call he instructed me that he wanted to turn himself in. However, he needed to call his lawyer.

“The second call at 7.44pm he instructed me that he had spoken to his lawyer but was unable to come in that evening so he would turn himself in the following morning of October 24 at 9am.”

Prosecutors say that later that evening at about 10.40pm Mr Burrows arrived at the Southampton Rangers Sports Club, murdered Mr Swan and injured his friend, Damiko Gibbons.

DS Trott told the Supreme Court that Mr Burrows did not turn himself in on the morning of October 24. “He eventually turned himself in on Monday October 26 at 1.28pm at Hamilton Police Station,” he said. “I received no further communication with Mr Burrows after he called me on the Friday.”

At the end of DS Trott’s evidence yesterday, the prosecution closed its case.

Mr Burrows denies murdering Mr Swan, using a firearm to commit murder, wounding Mr Gibbons with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm and using a firearm to commit that offence.

A second defendant, Taj Browne, 22, denies being an accessory after the fact to murder. He is alleged to have given Mr Burrows a lift after the shooting. The trial continues.
