Serial burglar remanded in custody

A serial burglar who targeted homes in Smith’s and Hamilton Parish has been remanded to Drug Treatment Court pending sentencing.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Jahnai Thompson pleaded guilty to stealing goods worth a total of $4,652.35 from six homes between February 3 last year and January 19.

The unemployed 40-year-old, of no known address, also admitted having a pair of black latex gloves for use in a burglary and attempting to enter a Twin Lane South home in Hamilton Parish on January 24.

The court heard that Thompson’s crime spree ended after he was spotted attempting to enter the Twin Lane South home by the complainant.

She had been woken by banging at the door and spotted an unknown male trying to gain access. She then saw Thompson pulling at the screen on the kitchen window before putting it back and walking away.

She was able to give a partial description to police, who spotted Thompson later that day at the ClearView guest apartments.

Thompson ran but was pursued and eventually arrested. The latex gloves were discovered in his inner jacket.

During a police interview he admitted attempting to enter the home, telling officers he was going to “get something to eat if the door was open”.

Thompson then said the officers should have brought a list of all their “high profile” cases so he could tell them which he was responsible for.

He identified the homes he had targeted during a reconstruction and although he could not give specific times and dates, he was able to provide details about how he entered the homes and what was stolen.

In court today, he admitted stealing $50 in coins from a Harrington Sound Road dwelling in Smith’s on February 3, as well as a black Sony DVD plater, a black G-Box, two pearl necklaces, two containers of ice cream, one bottle of flavoured water and a gold coloured chain, valued at a total of $534.35, from a Valley View Lane home in Smith’s on November 17.

The court also heard that on an unknown date between October and December last year, Thompson stole a black G-Box, a bag of loose change, two pairs of winter boots and cleaning products, valued at a total of $225, from a Studio Lane home in Hamilton Parish.

On January 4, he broke into a Sleepy Hollow Drive residence in Hamilton Parish and stole five Samsung speakers, coins, a Play Station 4, an unknown number of DVDs and PS4 games, all to the value of $1,250. Two days later, he trespassed at an Aubrey Road home and stole an iPad, an iPod, a gold coloured necklace with anchor pendant, an AS Cooper gift certificate, a box of coins, a SpongeBob SquarePants backpack and a box of Oreo cookies, worth a total of $1,350.

And on January 19, he entered a Redkiln Road residence and stole three pairs of designer sunglasses, a pair of gold earrings with diamond chips and three tubs of ice cream, all to the value of $1,243.

Duty counsel Alexandra Wheatley told the court that Thompson has a drug problem. She asked for court reports and for Thompson to be sent to Drug Treatment Court.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered a Social Inquiry Report and a drug assessment. He remanded Thompson in custody and ordered that he observe Drug Treatment Court on a weekly basis.

Sentencing was adjourned to March 17.
