The palm print of a murder suspect was discovered on the minibus in which Lorenzo Stovell was shot dead, a court heard.

Jurors were told yesterday that the print belonging to Zakai Cann was found and “lifted” by crime scene investigators as they examined the minibus in the aftermath of the fatal shooting.

Mr Stovell was murdered as he sat in the parked minibus outside Woody’s in Sandys in September 2012.

Yesterday, Detective Sergeant Peter Thompson told the Supreme Court that he and a colleague, Detective Constable Jewel Hayward, took 14 “lifts” of prints from the minibus during their forensic examination.

Mr Cann’s lawyer, Charles Richardson, then asked DS Thompson if he was aware that as early as November 2012 police knew that a palm print belonging to Mr Cann had been found on the minibus.

DS Thompson replied: “Yes.”

Mr Richardson continued: “You resubmitted these lifts again in 2016?”

DS Thompson replied: “No, I did not resubmit the lifts; they would have been kept at the fingerprint unit. It was not done at my request, but I am aware they were looked at again four years later.”

Mr Richardson then asked: “You are aware that between November 2012 and April 2016 Mr Cann had not been charged with any offence?”

DS Thompson responded: “I was not aware of that.”

The jury has been told that Mr Stovell, who was 24 at the time and paralysed from the waist down owing to a previous firearms incident, was shot dead on the evening of September 23, 2012 as he sat in the minibus parked across from Woody’s.

Mr Cann and Trevone Saltus are accused of murdering Mr Stovell on the evening of September 23, 2012.

Prosecutors say that Mr Cann and Mr Saltus were part of a group of men that descended on the bus before Mr Stovell was shot and killed.

A third defendant, Cordova Simons-Marshall, is alleged to have hidden the murder weapon after the shooting.

Yesterday afternoon, jurors were shown footage from CCTV cameras outside Woody’s on the night of the shooting.

Meanwhile, other women who were on board the party bus during the evening provided their recollections of events leading up to the shooting.

Mr Cann, 27, and Mr Saltus, 28, both deny murder and using a firearm to commit murder.

Mr Simons-Marshall, 26, denies handling a 9mm Smith and Wesson autoloading pistol and being an accessory after the murder by concealing the gun.

The trial continues.
