A Smith’s woman involved in a crash admitted driving while over the legal blood-alcohol limit.

Jodi Lewis, 33, told the court that she had been drinking the night before the accident, and was not aware how much alcohol was still in her blood.

The court heard that at 7.15am on July 1 police responded to a report of a collision between a car and a bicycle.

When officers arrived on scene at the junction of Palmetto Road and North Shore Road, they found the cyclist being treated by the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service and spoke to the driver of the car.

During the conversation, they noticed she smelled of alcohol and was speaking loudly and excessively.

Asked if she had been drinking, she told the police that she had drunk alcohol the previous evening and agreed to provide a breath sample.

Her breath was tested and revealed a lower reading of 107mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood — over the legal limit of 80mg.

After pleading guilty, Lewis told Magistrates’ Court: “That particular night I had gone out with a few friends. I realised I had to much to drink, so I slept in my car.

“I woke up in the morning to drive home and that’s when it happened.”

She also said that the morning sun had limited her vision, explaining that she moved to avoid two other bicyclists but did not see the third.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined Lewis $1,200, banning her from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
