Tourist with bullet in backpack fined $350

An American visitor spent part of his honeymoon in jail after a bullet was found in his backpack.

The live ammunition was discovered as James Latham, 20, tried to reboard cruise ship Anthem of the Seas, Magistrates’ Court heard.

The bullet was discovered by security personnel as Latham tried to go on board on Saturday.

Latham, from Virginia, admitted the offence yesterday.

He told the court he had been to a shooting range at home before he started his trip and was unaware that the round was in his bag.

He said that he was on his honeymoon with his wife when he was arrested.

Latham said: “I am truly sorry.”

He added that the one night and two days he had spent in jail were “very scary”.

Latham said: “This won’t ever happen again.”

Magistrate Tyrone Chin said Latham’s honeymoon had been memorable “for all the wrong reasons” and fined him $350.
