Motorcycle thief sent to drug court
A man who stole two motorcycles and took a helmet and clothing from a third has been sent to drug treatment court.
Tarik Ebbin, 21, pleaded guilty to two counts of taking a vehicle without consent and several counts of theft related to incidents between December 3 and December 20.
Magistrates’ Court heard that police CCTV cameras recorded the Smith’s man breaking into a motorcycle parked at Pier 6 on Hamilton’s Front Street at about 3am on December 3,
Officers went to the area and found Ebbin sitting on a wall with a helmet, a sweatshirt, a raincoat and a broken wooden table leg.
He admitted stealing the first three items from a parked bike.
He told police: “Someone stole my helmet, so I stole one. That’s what everyone does.”
Ebbin was arrested and charged that week, but denied the offence and was released on bail.
However, he was recorded on December 19 going into a car at Aon House on Woodbourne Avenue, Pembroke.
Cameras caught him jumping over a barrier and taking a motorcycle that had its keys left in the basket.
Ebbin was seen on a CCTV camera to go into the car park of the Powerhouse building on Par-la-Ville Road in Hamilton the next day.
He took another motorcycle that also had its keys left in the basket.
Ebbin pleaded guilty to all of the offences yesterday.
The court heard that Ebbin had previous convictions for similar offences.
Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe remanded Ebbin in custody for the drug court appearance.
