An employee at telecoms firm Digicel returned to work yesterday after a criminal action against the individual was dropped.

The company said it had also carried out an internal investigation but no details would be made public.

A spokeswoman for Digicel, which is incorporated in Bermuda but is based in Jamaica, said the Crown counsel in the Department of Public Prosecutions “decided to dismiss the case”.

She added: “The prosecution offered no evidence and the magistrate dismissed the case.”

Digicel first issued a statement on the matter last August after police launched inquiries into an alleged incident.

At the time, the company said the staff member involved was away from the office until the investigation concluded.

The spokeswoman said yesterday: “It’s important to make clear that as a good corporate citizen and a family brand, we take any instances of, or indeed allegations of, wrongdoing or inappropriate behaviour by our staff members extremely seriously.

“As such, and in the spirit of our value of transparency, we took great care to ensure that we co-operated fully with the investigation and ensuing legal action and followed due process at all times.

“With the court’s decision, the matter is now closed via the official channels, which in turn means we can close the book on this also.”

She confirmed that the staff member returned to work yesterday.

The spokeswoman added: “We did do an internal investigation but, as you would expect, we would not be making public information from an internal investigation.”

A request for comment from the DPP was made through the Government’s communications department.
