Crash driver banned for 18 months

A man who crashed his car into a pillar near his home has been banned from the road for refusing to give a breath sample.

Herbert Biryomumaisho, 35, apologised to Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to the offence on Monday.

The court heard that at about 5am on March 2, police received a report of a collision on Poinciana Road in Devonshire.

When they arrived, they saw a car had crashed into a pillar. Biryomumaisho was sat in the driver’s seat and the keys were in the ignition.

Police spoke to Biryomumaisho and noticed that his breath smelled like alcohol, his voice was slurred and he was unable to stand still without swaying.

The officers repeatedly requested Biryomumaisho to provide a breath sample, but he refused. Magistrate Tyrone Chin fined Biryomumaisho $1,000 and banned him from driving all vehicles for 18 months.
