Speeding drink-driver banned for 18 months

A speeding driver who admitted to police he had been drinking was fined and banned from the roads for 18 months yesterday.

Tristan Smith, 26, was clocked at 66km/h — almost twice the speed limit — by a police speed trap on Middle Road, Southampton, Magistrates’ Court heard.

Smith, from Sandys, was pulled over and warned about his speed and police suspected he had been drinking.

He told officers: “I had a few.”

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station for a breath test, but told police: “I’m not taking it.”

Smith admitted speeding and refusing to give a breath test on February 27.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe fined Smith $1,000 on the breath test charge in addition to the ban and $360 for speeding.
