Low score beyond big-hitting St David’s

Bailey’s Bay won a second Belco Cup title in five years yesterday after home team St David’s failed to chase down a modest 128 for victory in a rain-shortened final.

St David’s, based on their batting depth and the 340 they posted against Southampton Rangers the day before in the semi-finals, were expected to make easy work of their target in a match reduced to 30 overs a side after morning rain delayed the start by three hours.

However, Bay’s bowling proved too much for St David’s, with teenager Nyrobi Carmichael voted Man of the Match after his three for 24 from six overs kept Bay in firm control with St David’s reeling at 73 for seven by the 23rd over.

St David’s needed a decent partnership to tilt the match back in their favour but Bay kept it tight, conceding just one extra in the innings, but more importantly removing key batsmen for low scores.

Delyone Borden, a century maker at Somerset on Saturday, went for just two in the sixth over and when Fiqre Crockwell departed next over, also lbw, the home team were already 19 for two.

However, there was no need to panic as there was still plenty of batting — and overs — left to reach the target.

But when O.J. Pitcher, the St David’s captain, was bowled by Malachi Jones to make it 34 for three and then opener Shea Pitcher and Allan Douglas Jr were dismissed in the fifteenth and sixteenth overs to make it 48 for five, an exciting finish looked on the cards.

Carmichael, brought on in the thirteenth over, removed top scorer Shea Pitcher in his second over after the opener skied a shot to Jones in the covers. In the next over Jones knocked back Douglas’s off stump.

Stovell and Shannon Raynor, two players who won the cup with Rangers last year, briefly threatened to launch a fightback as they put on 20 valuable runs for the sixth wicket before Stovell, after reaching 23 in his best knock for St David’s so far, was bowled by Carmichael in the 21st over.

Carmichael then bowled Kevin Hurdle off an inside edge in his next over to make it 73 for seven and the Bay fans were starting to sing.

“I came out today looking to play, the whole team worked hard in training and the hard work paid off,” said the 19-year-old Carmichael after receiving the MVP trophy.

“I was a little bit surprised [to win MVP] because there were some other good bowling performances for us.

“They told me not to do anything but keep it straight, line and length, and try to get the dot balls, but eventually I got the wickets as well.”

Five overs after Carmichael removed Hurdle, it was all over as Derrick Brangman, back for his second spell, picked up two late wickets.

He dropped an easy chance from Shannon Raynor at long-off off the bowling of Zeko Burgess but made amends next over by having Rudell Pitcher caught, ironically by Burgess at long-on, and then claimed the last wicket of Justin Pitcher.

Jones took a composed catch at mid-wicket as Pitcher tried to clear the boundary with St David’s now needing 32 runs in the last three overs.

Brangman finished with three for 12 from 5.1 overs while Kyle Hodsoll had two for 20 off five and Jones two for 15 from six.

It was all going well for St David’s who, after winning the toss and inserting Bay, got a wicket on the fourth ball of the match when Pierre Smith was caught at slip by Stovell. Terryn Fray and captain Rodney Trott laid the foundation for the fightback when they added 66 for the second wicket in 18 overs.

Then things quickly changed as St David’s struck three quick blows to have Bay in trouble at 74 for four in the 20th over.

Fray was run out after a mix-up resulted in him stranded at the bowler’s end as Shea Pitcher threw from fine leg. Stephen Outerbridge was bowled by Stovell next over before Trott was bowled by Douglas the next over. Zeko Burgess and Kyle Hodsoll added 12 and 11 in the tail end after putting on 20 for the eighth wicket.

Douglas was the pick of the St David’s bowlers with three for 23.
