Somerset claim early bragging rights

A thorn in their side: Edness, who led Somerset to victory last year, was again instrumental in St George’s downfall (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

Somerset enjoyed pre-Cup Match bragging rights after beating St George’s for the second time in the league, this time by 44 runs in a Logic First Division match yesterday at Wellington Oval.

Greg Maybury and Jekon Edness, both dropped early in their innings by Detroy Smith and wicketkeeper Okera Bascome, led the Somerset batting with 73 and 60 respectively after sharing in a partnership of 132.

Jordan DeSilva, the Somerset captain, added 38 to the final total of 227, which proved too steep for St George’s who replied with 183.

Greg Foggo, back from England and making a first appearance for St George’s, claimed two for 49 off ten overs to lead their bowling. There were three run outs in the Somerset innings.

St George’s were dismissed in 41.3 overs with Ankoma Cannonier their top scorer with 56, while Onias Bascome made 30 and Damon Walker 25. Spinners Joshua Gilbert and Jacobi Robinson each took four wickets, Gilbert giving up 52 in his ten overs and Robinson 33 in ten.

Meanwhile, Warwick shocked Devonshire Rec at Southampton Oval to record their second win in the league. They dismissed Rec for 120 in 30 overs and then replied with 121 for four in 25 overs with Lionel Cann, their player-coach, scoring 64 not out batting at No 4.

Wilbur Burt took two for 18 for Rec, after earlier leading their batting with 28.

Chare Smith claimed four for 18 in ten overs, and Kanhai Darrell three for 23 in ten to lead the Warwick bowling.
