All eyes turn East as clubs make their picks

Back in contention: Trott has made himself available for selection

St George’s are expected to ring in the changes again tonight as they try to find a team capable of ending Somerset’s recent dominance of Cup Match.

For the past three years the East End side have made six changes to their team and that trend could continue with three changes forced on them through voids left by Fiqre Crockwell, Jason Anderson and Christian Burgess.

Last year they named colt Macai Simmons and recalled Burgess, Onias Bascome, Stefan Kelly, Damali Bell and Treadwell Gibbons. All six will feature in today’s trial match at Wellington Oval with both clubs eager to get in a final trial this time after rain washed out the matches last year for the first time in recent memory.

Trying to win back places will be Rodney Trott, Allan Douglas, Lionel Cann, Zeko Burgess and Justin Pitcher, while Sinclair Smith and Temiko Wilson will be battling for inclusion as colts. All could make a strong claim with good performances today.

Somerset’s selection should be reasonably straight forward as they show faith in the players who won comfortably at Wellington Oval last year.

All 11 will play today when Jordan DeSilva, the new captain, leads the President’s team against a Vice-president’s XI, captained by Malachi Jones.

Somerset, comfortable winners the last two years, have made just three changes in the past three years, with Stephen Outerbridge returning last year in place of Deunte Darrell.

In 2013 they named the same team that won by ten wickets in 2012, after making four changes to the side that lost at Wellington Oval in 2011.

Pushing for spots this year are youngsters Justin Donawa and Alex Dore, while Joshua Gilbert is seeking a recall after last playing in 2011.

Donawa will lead Somerset in tomorrow’s Colts Cup Match at Somerset, replacing last year’s captain Kwasi James who keeps his spot in the team.

Last year the champions hung on for a draw at Wellington Oval when ninth-wicket pair Micah Simons and Sheldon Caesar frustrated St George’s for ten overs.

St George’s scored 158 and then had Somerset struggling at 56 for six at one stage, before a seventh-wicket stand of 55 between Antoinio Darrell and Kamel Easton helped Somerset reach 122 for eight in reply.
