More than just a safe pair of hands

The best fielder in this year’s Cup Match at Somerset Cricket Club will walk away laden with prizes.

Dennis Wainwright, the Safe Hands Award co-ordinator and former St George’s Cup Match wicketkeeper and captain, said the best fielder will receive $1,000 in cash, $1,000 in travel gift vouchers, cricket gear as well the Calvin “Bummy” Symonds plaque.

He noted that this year’s winner will be judged on their all-round fielding display, and not just for taking an excellent catch during each innings.

“We continue to emphasise that it’s more than just a catch,” Wainwright, who achieved a record 37 dismissals during a 20-year Cup Match career, said. “It’s all-round fielding and that’s what I emphasise and what I told the players last year.”

The eventual winner will be announced at the conclusion of the two-day match and will be awarded their prizes at an awards ceremony to be held next week Tuesday at Bermuda Healthcare Services, sponsors of the Safe Hands Award.

The selection panel is yet to be confirmed, but is expected to include at least two broadcasters.

Somerset’s Derrick Brangman was last year’s Safe Hands Award winner.

Brangman held three catches, including an outstanding diving effort to dismiss Christian Burgess, the St George’s wicketkeeper, in the second innings.

The Safe Hands Award was inaugurated in 1996 in honour of legendary St George’s Cup Match captain Symonds, who led the East Enders to an unprecedented eight victories between 1961 and 1969.
