Bermuda could be without opening batsman and vice-captain Terryn Fray for the flight to Los Angeles tomorrow after he dislocated his finger while fielding in the match against Canada yesterday at the National Sports Centre.

Fray was checked by Danielle Richold, the team physiotherapist, and then taken to hospital by official Russell Richardson to have the injury treated. He never returned to the ground, leaving team members to wait nervously for news on his condition.

“Depending on the recommendation of the surgeon he could be in or could be out, so we all have our fingers crossed,” said Neil Speight, the Bermuda Cricket Board chief executive. “It’s anxious moments right now.”

The injury came in the 32nd over of the Canada innings when Fray stopped a boundary, but immediately signalled that he hurt his right hand. His reaction as he walked across the field to the pavilion suggested the injury was serious.

With OJ Pitcher, the Bermuda captain, still not 100 per cent fit, it would be a huge blow to lose Fray for the World Cricket League Division Four tournament. The team will leave Bermuda tomorrow, with Kwame Tucker, the wicketkeeper batsman, on standby.

“We’ve definitely had a rough past few months, losing players for various reasons,” Pitcher said. “It really hurt him but he’s a tough character.

“He’s a strong young man and hopefully he’ll be with us on the tour. He’s a very classy early order bat, he thinks the game and is an easy guy to bat with.”

Bermuda, who play their final warm-up match against Canada today at the National Sports Centre, play their first match in the tournament on Friday against the United States.
