DeSilva stars as team off the mark in Los Angeles

Star man: Bermuda all-rounder DeSilva

Jordan DeSilva delivered with bat and ball as Bermuda picked up their first win in the World Cricket League Division Four tournament with an 38-run victory over Denmark in Los Angeles yesterday

DeSilva scored 33 not out, sharing a crucial unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 60 with Dennico Hollis to enable Bermuda to post their highest total in the tournament with 221 for seven. The Somerset captain then took four wickets for 23 runs as Denmark were dismissed for 183 in 48.1 overs.

DeSilva claimed the final Denmark wicket when he bowled Yasir Iqbal for 39.

Clay Smith, the Bermuda coach, believes his side produced a satisfactory performance.

“We can do a lot better from the batting aspect,” Smith said. “Even though we scored 221, we had three or four of our top batsmen who didn’t get off. We need one of two of them to get big totals as they’re good enough. On these tracks if we score 250 we’re going to win nine out of ten games. We’re hoping over the next two games we’ll be able to execute a lot better.”

DeSilva claimed the first wicket, trapping wicketkeeper Frederik Klokker lbw before removing Saif Ahmad first ball. Cejay Outerbridge followed up with the wickets of Aftab Ahmed and Hamid Shah to leave unbeaten Denmark wobbling at 21 for four. Janeiro Tucker grabbed three wickets for 29 runs, including danger man Zameer Khan for 47.

Smith said the stand between DeSilva and Hollis was hugely significant in helping Bermuda get off the mark after losing to the United States and Oman at the weekend.

“Working the ball for ones and twos and rotating the strike is something we’ve worked hard at,” he said. “Those two scored 60 off the last ten overs without any risks. They played extremely well and put the team in a winning position.”

Bermuda made two changes to the side that lost to Oman, with Delray Rawlins, who arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday, coming in for Brian Hall, while Dennico Hollis replaced wicketkeeper Dean Minors who picked up a hand injury. Rawlins top scored for Bermuda with 39, while Dion Stovell hit 38 and captain OJ Pitcher struck 31.

Today Bermuda face Jersey, who also won their first game yesterday with a three-wicket victory over Italy.

“A win would pretty much take relegation out of the equation,” Smith added. “Depending on the outcome of the other games, promotion is still on the cards.”
