Rawlins stands out with muscular display

Rawlins top scored with 46

Delray Rawlins led the England Under-19 batting with 46 but could not prevent India from securing a 129-run victory in Mumbai to level their five-match One-Day International series.

Rawlins, who scored an unbeaten 107 in England’s 23-run win over India on Monday, was again their top batsman, stroking five fours and two sixes from 35 balls.

However, it came in a losing cause as England were dismissed for 158 in 33.4 overs in reply to India’s 287 for eight.

India, who won the toss, produced the perfect response to their opening-match loss, as Harvik Desai and Himanshu Rana led with half-centuries at the Brabourne Stadium, before their bowlers restricted England to 4.69 runs an over in their run chase. Rana, coming off a century in the first ODI at the Wankhede Stadium, led the India top order with 58 off 66 balls with ten fours after losing opening partner Prithvi Shaw with just 20 runs on the board.

Rana and Shubman Gill added 80 for the second wicket in 12 overs as the 100 came up in the nineteenth over.

There was a minor slump with three wickets going down as India were pegged back on 108 for four.

However, a middle-order knock of 75 off 62 balls by wicketkeeper Desai helped steady things before Kamlesh Nagarkoti added a useful 36 not out in the tail end. England dropped two catches as they conceded nearly 90 runs in the final ten overs. Desai fell to a catch at cover point as opener Matthew Fisher claimed his fourth wicket to finish with four for 44. Henry Brookes, first change, claimed three for 60 while spinner Rawlins, the sixth bowler used, was wicketless in his ten overs, going for 44 runs.

It was with the bat that Rawlins was outstanding once gain. According to the report on ESPNcricinfo, “Rawlins was the only batsman from both teams to persist with cross-batted strokes off the spinners, employing the sweep and reverse-sweep to fruition.

“He forced India’s spinners, who troubled the rest of the batting line-up, to overcompensate.

“He profited while waiting on the back foot too, rocking back and muscling sixes straight down the ground.

“No other batsman in this series has come close to matching his power. He was lbw for 46, off the bowling of Ishan Porel, but the ball may have pitched outside leg.”

Rawlins came to the crease at 80 for four in the nineteenth over and departed in the 31st over on 146 for eight, the match all but wrapped up by India. Opener Harry Brook scored 26 off 34 balls while wicketkeeper Ollie Pope contributed 24 at No 5 after opener Max Holden and George Bartlett, at No 3, both failed to reach double figures after being caught behind.

Euan Woods and Pope led England’s recovery with a staunch fourth-wicket stand of 40 that kept India’s spinners at bay. Both batsmen looked fluent before being dismissed in clumsy fashion: Pope run-out at the striker’s end after calling for a risky run to square leg, and Woods chipping a catch to mid-off.

Not long after, Tom Banton misread the length from left-arm spinner Anukul Roy, and was bowled attempting to cut a slider. England’s fate, by then, was all but sealed at 101 for six in the 24th over as Rawlins lost another partner.
