England frustrated with Youth Test draw

Rawlins got 15 in England’s second innings

Delray Rawlins’ England Under-19 side drew the first Youth Test against India in Nagpur yesterday, with the home side hanging on at 189 for eight at the close of the four-day match.

Suresh Lokeshwar, the India wicketkeeper, was their saviour after scoring 92 not out from 125 balls, hitting 14 fours during 136 minutes at the crease. India were set 238 to win on the final day and were four wickets down after just 5.1 overs before their recovery began.

Bermudian all-rounder Rawlins, scored 15 in the England second innings before he was trapped leg-before to be fourth out with England on 78. He was unbeaten on 70 in the first innings.

England were chasing a declaration target but instead were all out for 167 after 53 overs. George Bartlett, their highest scorer with 68 following a top knock of 179 in the first innings, added 73 with Ollie Pope for the fifth wicket after they were reduced to 78 for four.

England used seven bowlers, with Rawlins having just two overs for seven.

New-ball pair Henry Brookes and Aaron Beard shared the first five India wickets in the second innings, Brookes claimed three for 56 and Beard two for 24.

The second Youth Test starts on Tuesday, also in Nagpur.
