Arnold Manders could be set for a return to Premier Division cricket side Western Stars Sports Club.

The former Stars captain and coach has been approached by the St John’s Field side, who are believed to be keen for Manders to take the reigns.

“I have been asked but nothing has been confirmed as of yet,” said Manders, a former Bermuda captain.

“The discussions over the possibility of me coaching Western Stars this season are ongoing.”

Manders comes highly qualified for the job. He holds Cricket Australia High Performance, West Indies Cricket Board and England and Wales Cricket Board coaching badges and previously served as Bermuda coach, Bermuda Cricket Board director of development and chairman of selectors. He also coached Bermuda at the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia in 2008.

Manders, who played for St George’s, is among a small group of players to have scored multiple hundreds in Cup Match.

He also won countless honours during his heyday as an all-rounder at Stars.

Stars were forced to seek a new coach after Wendell Smith stepped down at the end of last season, having guided the side to a comfortable fourth in their first season back in the top flight.

Smith joined Stars in 2015 and won the First Division title in his first season.

Stars are not the only Premier Division club looking for a new coach.

Cleveland County are also exploring their options after Clay Smith, the Bermuda coach, opted not to stay on beyond his contract that expired at the end of last season. David Hemp, the former Glamorgan and Bermuda cricket captain, is among the candidates being considered for the vacant job.

Western Stars Sports Club have invited anyone interested in playing for them this summer to a meeting next Monday at their St John’s Field clubhouse at 6pm
