Delray Rawlins carried on where he left off in India with England Under-19 in January by scoring 47 for Sussex on the opening day of a three-day friendly against Surrey at the 1st Central County Ground in Hove yesterday.

In a match that was delayed a day because of bad weather, Rawlins put on 74 for the third wicket with Laurie Evans, a winter signing from Warwickshire.

Playing in similar confident style that has brought him plenty of runs during the winter, Rawlins fell short of his fifty when he was bowled by a low ball from leg spinner Scott Borthwick shortly before lunch.

Evans made 31 before he was bowled after the interval as Sussex finished the day on 241 for five. Phil Salt (48) and Jofra Archer (18) put on unbroken stand of 55 for the sixth wicket when the Sussex innings ended at 55 overs.

It was initially agreed that Sussex would bat 60 overs yesterday, with the visiting side taking the final 30 overs of the day. Surrey batted for 12 overs and reached 49 without loss before it was deemed that the light was too poor for play to continue.
