Sussex’s cricketers returned to Hove two days early today after they were thrashed by Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, going down by an innings and 88 runs on the second day of their four-day match.

Bermudian Delray Rawlins, playing in his second Specsavers County Championship match, was dismissed for four in the first innings and a 14-ball duck in the second as Sussex were restricted to 155 and then 204 as Notts enforced the follow-on. They posted a mammoth 447 in their first innings.

Rawlins, one of the overnight batsmen, got off the mark yesterday with a four but his 24-minute stay at the crease ended after facing 16 balls. He was fourth out when the score was 19, though Sussex did recover thanks to efforts by captain Luke Wright and Jofra Archer further down the order.

Archer, batting at No 9, scored 40 from 29 balls with five fours and two sixes while Wright scored 34. Paceman James Pattinson claimed four for 22 off eight overs while Stuart Broad and Jake Ball both took two wickets.

Sent back in, Sussex scored 204 in their second innings with Chris Nash scoring 53 from six fours and two sixes after 123 minutes at the crease, while Archer hit 47 in the tailend from 32 balls. He was at the crease for 63 minutes and hit six fours and a six. Luke Wright scored 34.

Rawlins, batting at No 3, was caught off the bowling of Broad, an England Test player, after batting for 22 minutes. Broad and Pattinson, who shared the new ball, took three wickets along with first-change bowler Luke Fletcher.
