Former Bermuda all-rounder Noel Gibbons has joined the St George’s Cricket Club selection committee, replacing Gary Brangman.

Gibbons, who played for St George’s between 1971 and 1993, scoring 783 runs in 40 innings, will join a committee made up of chairman Damon Walker, Herbie Bascome, Ryan Steede and the Cup Match captain once he is confirmed.

“The cricket club really appreciates the service Gary has given,” said Walker, who took over as selection committee chairman last year and is still the chairman of cricket.

The club have scheduled their first trial match for Saturday, starting at 10am at St David’s field. The teams will be captained by Macai Simmons and Oronde Bascome, but most of last year’s team are not selected, giving the selectors an opportunity to look at some new faces.

“The regular names are sitting out this one, which I don’t mind because it gives us a chance to look at some fresh players,” Walker said.

Two more trials are scheduled for July 15 and 29, when the Cup Match team will be selected. This year’s annual classic will be played at Wellington Oval on August 3 and 4.

Somerset, the holders, have also begun Cup Match preparation and will be training every Tuesday at 6.30pm, starting next week. Interested players are welcome to participate in the sessions.
