The winners of the Under-19 World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Toronto between Americas trio Canada, United States and Bermuda will also compete in the Super50 One-Day tournament in St Kitts next month.

The winners will also qualify for the 2018 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.

Neil Speight, the Bermuda Cricket Board chief executive, confirmed yesterday that the winners of the triangular tournament, which starts next Monday, will go to the tournament from August 15 to 28, playing a round-robin tournament against Leeward Islands, Jamaica, Barbados, Windwards, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago.

Previously the Americas sent a representative team made up of players from the three countries, with four players — Delray Rawlins, Alex Dore, Micah Simons and Onias Bascome — selected from Bermuda for the 2014 tournament in Guyana.

Yesterday, Cricket West Indies announced it would be hosting three age-group development tournaments this summer, starting with the under-17s in Trinidad.

That tournament kicked off yesterday and will be followed next week by the under-15s in Barbados. The regional under-19 tournament is set to start on July 24 in St Kitts ahead of the one-day event.

“The aim of our youth tournaments is to identify players with talent and give them an opportunity to further develop their skills through the intensity of competition against their peers from around the region,” said Rawl Lewis, the Cricket West Indies project officer for youth tournaments.

“We’ve done a lot of planning and preparation for this period which will be quite busy, but we are looking forward to see how our young players are developing and hope that they grab this opportunity with open arms.

“There are also incentives for the best of our young players to play for an age group West Indies team, as the under-15s are scheduled to go to England again next month and a strong performance could see a few players squeeze into the under-19 side for the ICC Youth World Cup early next year in New Zealand.”

That tournament will involve the ten Test playing countries, Namibia, who were the top-ranked ICC Associates team at the 2016 World Cup, and the five regional winners. The tournament will run from January 13 to February 3.

It will be the twelfth edition of the under-19 Cricket World Cup, and the third time it will be held in New Zealand, following previous tournaments there in 2002 and 2010.

At this summer’s regional youth tournaments in the West Indies, the under-17s will christen the recently opened Brian Lara Cricket Academy located in the south Trinidad district of Tarouba. It will mark the first time any kind of regional matches will be staged there.
