Bermuda’s hopes of qualifying for the Under-19 World Cup next year are all but over after a heavy defeat by 141 runs to Canada in Under-19 World Cup Qualifier Americas Region yesterday.

Under sunny skies at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club, Bermuda captain Nzari Paynter won the toss and sent Canada into bat on a pitch that had yielded only 127 runs in 73 overs the previous day in United States’ win over Canada.

An early wicket for Nirobi Smith Mills gave the islanders hope that perhaps the pitch would again trouble the batsmen but useful partnerships involving the highly talented Arslan Khan (74) gave Canada a handy 229 for eight in 50 overs on a large lush outfield. The top bowlers for Bermuda were Dalin Richardson two for 27 and Smith Mills two for 52.

In reply, Bermuda were bundled out for only 88 in 35.3 overs as wickets fell at regular intervals as the Canadians opted for a four-prong spin attack after their fast bowlers completed their first spells.

Nzari Paynter (15), Dalin Richardson (14), Jabari Darrell (13) and Marcus Scotland (11) were those who managed double figures. Man-of-the-match Khan claimed three for nine with Faisal Jamkhandi three for 11 and Pieter Pretorius two for 14.

At the midway point of the tournament the US top the table unbeaten on four points, Canada are second on two points while Bermuda are yet to record a win. All teams have a rest day today with Bermuda back in action tomorrow against the US at the picturesque Toronto Cricket, Skating and Curling Club.
