Somerset handed welcome headache

Spoilt for choice: Leverock has posed Somerset with a welcome selection headache

Kamau Leverock has thrown his hat into the ring and is among a trio of players seeking recalls to Somerset’s Cup Match team.

Michael Corday, the chairman of Somerset’s selection committee, has confirmed that the Bermuda and Cardiff MCCU all-rounder has made himself available for selection.

“We have been told that he is coming back and will be training Wednesday and Thursday and will be in the trial on Saturday,” Corday said. “He has as much chance as anybody else, but as you know there’s no guarantee for anybody.”

Leverock followed in the footsteps of uncle Dwayne and great uncle Roger when he made his Cup Match debut for Somerset at Wellington Oval in 2011.

The 22-year-old made three appearances in the classic before making himself unavailable in 2014 because of commitments for Horsham Cricket Club in the Sussex Premier League.

Leverock is one of three Somerset players seeking recalls this year along with off spinner Joshua Gilbert and St David’s batsman Dion Stovell.

“We have wonderful options which gives us a lot to think about,” Corday added. “I don’t know how all the selectors will think. But we’re usually on the same page so we try and keep it simple.”

n Three former captains are among those to be honoured at Heritage Productions Annual Emancipation Cup Match Awards Dinner.

Brothers-in-law Perry Maybury and Andre Manders, who both led Somerset, and Clay Smith, who guided St George’s to victory in 1997, are among eight former players who will be celebrated during the luncheon at St George’s Cricket Club on July 27.

Also among the Somerset players being honoured are Richard Basden, Stevie Lightbourne, Dean Minors, Eugene Foggo and Dale Fox.

Tickets are $30 and are available at Brunswick Street Bakery, Nu-Look Barber Shop, Somerset Cricket Club and St George’s Cricket Club.
