Frustrating finish for Rawlins and Sussex

Rawlins saw his game washed out

Delray Rawlins and his Sussex team-mates endured a frustrating wait in the pavilion after the third and final day of their Second XI Championship cricket game at home to Surrey was washed out.

The match the 1st Central County Ground ended in a draw on Wednesday.

“It happens, and we knew it was going to rain,” Rawlins said.

“We weren’t really too annoyed and can’t do much about it really.”

Rawlins and his team-mates were firmly in the driver’s seat after Surrey had posted 272 on the second day in response to Sussex’s first innings total of 400 for nine declared.

Luke Wells led the Sussex run feast after scoring his second double century of the season during Monday’s opening day’s play.

The left-handed batsman scored 208 from 211 balls with 23 fours and eight sixes.

Rawlins scored 42 and Harry Finch, the Sussex captain, 57.

“The 42 was quite nice, it felt OK,” Rawlins said. “I just tried to enjoy my batting and play the way I normally play.”

Will Beer, the Sussex leg spinner, claimed five for 61 in the Surrey innings.

Sussex second XI will play two Twenty20 matches against Unicorns at Long Marston CC next Thursday.

Rawlins completed a meteoric rise through English cricket to make his first-class debut for Sussex in April.

The 19-year-old was handed his county cap for his debut in Sussex’s opening Specsavers County Championship Second Division match against Kent at Hove.
