Delray Rawlins said he is looking forward to continuing his development at Sussex under new coach Jason Gillespie.

Former Australia fast bowler Gillespie, who coached Yorkshire to the County Championship title in 2014 and 2015, has agreed an initial three-year deal at Hove. He replaces Mark Davis, who left the club by mutual consent last month.

“Jason Gillespie has a lot of experience in the head coaching role with previous stints at Yorkshire winning the county championship,” Rawlins told The Royal Gazette. “I’m really looking forward to working with him and hopefully improve as a player and help the club to start moving back on the direction to winning trophies.”

Rawlins, the former PHC, Bailey’s Bay and St George’s Cup Match all-rounder, is being put through his paces by Peter Such, the England and Wales Cricket Board spin bowling coach, and Stuart MacGill, a former Australia leg spinner, during a spin bowling camp with the England Lions this week in Queensland.

“I’ve been bowling at the Lions lads and it’s been a very enjoyable week,” Rawlins said. “I’ve been learning a lot and challenging myself against some top players here.”

Rawlins has spent the past month in Gillespie’s home city, playing for Sydney Cricket Club in the New South Wales Premier League as part of the ECB’s International Pathway programme.

“I’m enjoying my cricket in Sydney and it’s a good league to be in,” Rawlins said. “I just want to keep trying to contribute to helping the lads win games.”

Rawlins made four appearances for Sussex in the Specsavers County Championship Second Division last season and helped the club win the Second XI Twenty20 tournament.

He made his first-class debut against Kent on the opening day of the County Championship second division, scoring a maiden fifty at that level against Nottinghamshire.

Rawlins signed a new deal in October keeping him at Sussex at least until the end of 2019.

It was the second time in seven months he was offered a new contract, having had his initial one-year deal extended in March.
