High five for teenager Mills
Teenager Nirobi Mills claimed five wickets as Southampton Rangers beat Western Stars by 22 runs in a low-scoring match in the Open League at St John’s Field on Saturday.
Rangers were sent in and were restricted to 140 for nine in 42.1 overs.
Openers Malachi Jones and Shannon Rayner gave them an encouraging start with a stand of 31, before Rayner departed for 23.
Stars fought back, with No 3 batsman Charles Trott out first ball before Gerald Simons went for three.
Jones was out for 27 to make it 71 for four before Rangers moved on to 100 for seven when Dion Stovell was out for 19.
Youngsters Tayo Smith and Sheldon Caesar, the captain, added 15 and 12 in the tail as Rangers, batting with ten men, reached 140.
Stars struggled in their run chase as early order trio Jaiden Manders, Seth Campbell and Andre Manders all failed to reach double figures to back up the 33 from 30 balls scored by opener Wayne Campbell.
Campbell’s departure made it 58 for four, before they slumped further to 81 for six and 98 for seven. Dante Wellman and Justin Robinson were the only other Stars batsmen in double figures with 18 and 14 in the middle order before they were eventually dismissed for 118 in 36.3 overs.
Mills, who shared the new ball with Sheldon Caesar, completed his five-wicket haul while Charles Trott, on his Rangers debut, took one for one for 22.
