Cleveland clinch promotion

Steven Bremar, the Cleveland captain

Cleveland County completed their most successful weekend of the season when they followed up their Eastern Counties success on Saturday by clinching the automatic promotion spot yesterday with a 213-run victory over PHC at Wellington Oval.

Cleveland, six points behind leaders Flatts going into the match, picked up extra bonus batting points to go with their win when their captain Steven Bremar scored a second straight century in the league to help his team post 308 for four.

They dismissed PHC for 95 in 28.2 overs to seal their win and move ahead of Flatts who went down by 119 runs to Willow Cuts at Somerset.

After winning the toss Cleveland clearly had a big total on their mind as Brandon Trott and player-coach Curtis Jackson put on 122 for the first wicket in 28.2 overs to lay the foundation. Trott was first to go after scoring 42 from 95 balls while Jackson followed two overs later for 63 off 81 balls, hitting seven fours and two sixes.

Bremar and Q’Shai Darrell (26) added 113 for the third wicket to bring up the 250 before Darrell departed in the 45th over. Bremar finished with 119 off just 65 balls, hitting nine fours and nine sixes as the PHC bowlers were battered, four of the six going for more than 50 overs.

In reply, PHC could only manage 95 with the biggest contribution being the 29 extras the Cleveland bowlers gave up. Makai Young claimed four for 20 from 8.2 overs while Mackih McGowan had two for 19 and Isaiah Creighton two for 23.

Meanwhile, guiding Cuts to victory were middle-order batsmen Shakeal Outerbridge and Deunte Darrell, who scored 58 and 52 respectively, and bowler Joseph Basden who led the home side attack with superb figures of six for 27.

Cuts posted 223 for nine in their allotted 50 overs and then dismissed Flatts for 104 in 34.5 overs.

Nelson Bascome led the Flatts bowling with three for 45 while opener Reggie Baker topped the visiting side batting with 27 from 76 balls.

Flatts will face Premier side Western Stars in a promotion play-off on July 29 at a venue yet to be confirmed.
