Bascome: we have weapons

Full of belief: Onias Bascome says St George’s can attack Somerset (Photograph by Akil Simmons)

Onias Bascome, the St George’s all-rounder, is convinced that the challengers have the necessary weapons in their bowling arsenal to keep Somerset’s batsmen under wraps.

“We have a good bowling attack with a lot of variation,” Bascome said. “As long as we keep rotating our bowlers and executing the things we have to do, I think we can get these 20 wickets that we need to get.”

Bascome will play a leading role in his team’s bowling attack having claimed a league-high 20 wickets with his medium-pace during the One 50 Overs Premier Division.

“I took 20 wickets this season and I’m looking to carry that on; just putting the ball in the right areas and making things happen, and I am very focused,” he said.

The player attributes some of his success with the ball to the advice of his father, Herbie Bascome, the former St George’s captain.

“I have a learnt a few more things from my father and that’s been key,” Bascome said. “Little things like using your wrist and the movement of the ball.

“But it’s more containing and putting the ball in the right areas and making the batsmen make the mistake.”

St George’s will also be relying on Bascome to deliver with the bat.

“Batting has always been my forte and I’m just looking to do my thing,” he said.

“Be positive when I go out there and go out there with the right mindset and do what I have to do.”

St George’s made six changes, including four colts, to their team from last year.

The bulk of the challengers’ team consists of their league players, something Bascome says works in their favour.

“Having seven of our league players in the team makes it a bit more smoother in terms of bonding well all season and now you’ve got maturity in the team with additions that can easily fit in and give Somerset a run for that cup,” he said. “The vibe in the team has been nice; we have four colts and everyone has come together nice.

“Everyone is respecting each other and, with seven league players going in, everyone has pretty much played with each other all season, which gives us that added bond.”

Bascome says his team’s good display in the league this season has given them more motivation going into the match.

“This season we were looking to do our best and see how far we could finish after getting promoted,” he said. “We did well in coming third, which gives us extra motivation.”

Bascome said that having Wendell Smith, a former St George’s captain, assisting club coach Ryan Steede has been a major plus.

“Wendell has been a big help,” he said. “He is very knowledgeable and gets a lot of information over to the guys, especially with his batting. He has been doing one-on-one sessions with certain individuals, which has helped us a lot.

“Just his presence helps us a lot because he knows so much about the game and he was a part of the powerhouse that St George’s created a little while back.”
