For the second straight weekend St David’s left Sea Breeze Oval with a trophy in their possession.

This time it was the One Premier Division Twenty20 title they claimed after a seven-wicket victory against nine-man St George’s.

The win left St David’s, who clinched the Eastern Counties Cup final last weekend, unbeaten from five matches in the T20 contest, as Allan Douglas continued on from where he left off against Western Stars in last weekend’s match.

Douglas, who hit 144 runs in that match, struck 74 from 29 balls to help pace the run chase after St George’s posted a challenging 184 for six.

St David’s reached 187 for three with 1.5 overs remaining, after captain Chris Douglas batted throughout the innings, scoring 61 not out from 48 balls. He hit three fours and a six.

Despite being short-handed, St George’s put up a fight, hoping to at least inflict the only loss on St David’s to finish with identical 4-1 records.

However, despite playing the first few overs with ten men, St David’s dug deep in their run chase with the Douglas cousins putting on 94 for the second wicket to take the score from 33 for one to 127 for two between the fourth and twelfth overs.

Allan Douglas looked set for a second straight century before he was brilliantly run out by bowler Ryan Steede’s direct hit at the non-striker’s end after he was sent back by Chris Douglas.

Allan Douglas hit two fours and eight sixes, including three consecutive sixes off the first over from Justin Denbrook.

After Brian Hall went cheaply, Chris Douglas and George O’Brien shared in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 57 in just 5.5 overs to seal the win, with Douglas hitting the winning boundary off the first ball of the nineteenth over from captain Macai Simmons. O’Brien finished on 29 not out.

“We ended up with 11 players by the fifth or sixth over,” Chris Douglas said. Key players were missing, including Justin Pitcher, who opted to play football for St David’s earlier in the day.

“He seems to get enjoyment out of it because it is new to him, and next week I’m going to be on the football field, too,” Douglas said. “I can’t wait.

They put up a big total on a small field, I would say they got that because we were one bowler short. I bowled an over myself and went for 24.”

Onias Bascome led St George’s batting with 62, with six sixes and three fours, while Simmons reached his half-century with a four off the final over to finish on 50 not out. He hit four sixes, scoring 16 off the final over from Cejay Outerbridge, including two sixes.

“It was a good game from both sides and my boys put in the effort,” Chris Douglas added. “Other guys couldn’t make it because of commitments, so it was good to pull off the victory with the team we had.

“This is the first captain’s innings they have got out of me all season.

“I decided I would just bat at the other end while the other batsman did the hard work. Allan was doing his job, raced across me and when he got out I had to put the foot on the gas.

“I had a big over or two which made it easy for us at the end. They were two fielders short and definitely a bowler short as well.”

Rudell Pitcher claimed two for 22 and Brian Hall two for 48 for St David’s.

n In the other match, Southampton Rangers finished their T20 season with a 52 runs victory over Western Stars at St John’s Field to finish in second place. Seth Campbell had an outstanding spell with the new ball, taking five for 21 as Rangers, after winning the toss, wobbled at 45 for four before only reaching 128 for nine from. However, Stars also found runs hard to come by as spinners Dion Stovell and Vernon Eve shared the new ball and helped restrict them to 44 for four by the thirteenth over.

Stovell gave up just eight runs in his four overs while Eve conceded 15. Hasan Durham was the most expensive of the Rangers bowlers, going for 31 runs in his four overs, although he claimed two wickets. Seion Darrell was the top batsman for Stars with 25 not out.

n The First Division T20 was not completed yesterday as the St John’s Field wicket was not prepared in time for the 11am match between Flatts Victoria and Cleveland County.

That match was played at 3pm at Devonshire Recreation Club instead of the final, with Flatts beating Cleveland by eight wickets to reach the final, which is now scheduled for next weekend at Sea Breeze Oval.

Cleveland were dismissed for just 66, as Flatts easily reached their target. In the first match at the Rec, Warwick Workmen’s Club beat Devonshire by 50 runs to reach the final.
