West XI’s hot streak comes to end

Tuff Dogs, the defending champions, halted resurgent West XI’s three-match winning streak in the Evening Cricket League’s Premier League, easing home by six wickets in the final over at Shelly Bay.

Treadwell Gibbons, whose three successive half-centuries helped West XI move off the foot of the table after a miserable run of five defeats, fell for 11, but Jim West struck 68, following his 55 the previous week, to underpin his side’s 128 for five.

A half-century from Maclaren Lowe and 42 from Justin Barritt steered Tuff Dogs to victory with four balls to spare.

The Associates, who have played two more games and have an inferior run rate to the leaders, joined Tuff Dogs on 18 points after defeating Renegades by 14 runs.

Will Tyrell’s 33 and 30 from Matt Ball provided the backbone of The Associates’ 133 for five after they chose to bat first. Despite Riann Engelbrecht’s 43 and Matt Spencer’s 34, Renegades were restricted to 119 for seven in reply.
