Passenger spat at bus driver

A passenger reportedly spat at a bus driver on Sunday, sparking further safety concerns from the transport ministry.

The Department of Public Transportation issued a statement today, pledging to take steps to prosecute anyone who attacks drivers

Senator Michael Fahy, the transport minister, stated of Sunday’s incident: “Such behaviour is totally unacceptable as it relates to safety, but also in terms of common decency.

“The bus operators should be appreciated for the job they do, day-in, day-out. I urge the public to please respect the role they play in our community.”

Attacks on bus drivers made the headlines three months ago, with one driver being repeatedly punched in the head by a passenger refusing to pay his full fare.

At the time, Mr Fahy promised steps to protect bus operators, including prosecution under the Omnibus (Conduct) Regulations 2012.

The ministry said the Bermuda Police Service has made inquiries into the latest incident.
