Police confirmed yesterday officers have launched an investigation into a report of a sex assault at a children’s home.

A police spokesman said: “The Bermuda Police Service is aware of an incident that took place at a governmental residential care facility and an investigation into the matter is now under way.”

A girl at the Brangman home in Devonshire awoke to find a man acting inappropriately in a sexual manner.

TNN Bermuda reported the incident, which happened in the early hours of last Saturday.

The news site said yesterday that the assault happened after a break-in at the Brangman Home for girls in Devonshire.

A statement from the Government last Sunday said: “The Ministry of Legal Affairs can confirm that during the early morning hours of November 24 there was a break-in and entry, by an unknown intruder, at the Department of Child and Family Services’ Brangman Home for girls facility.

“Thankfully, no residents or staff were harmed. The Ministry of Legal Affairs and DCFS social workers are working with residents to relieve the anxiety caused by the break-in and remain committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the facility residents and staff.”

It added: “The matter has been reported to the Bermuda Police Service and an active investigation is under way.”

Kathy Lynn Simmons, the Attorney-General and legal affairs minister, and the acting director of DCFS met staff and residents at the Brangman home after the incident.

Ms Simmons said: “The safety of our residents and staff are always priority. To that end, we have taken immediate precautions to ensure the safety by increasing security measures at the facility.

“Additionally, this week the Ministry of Public Works has engaged the services of a private security company for a full safety assessment and additional safety features being added to all facilities.”
