Mentally ill man held on remand

A man with mental health and drug problems, who had not been able to get adequate treatment here, was yesterday remanded.

Eric Richardson, 26, will spend ten days in prison to allow a probation review to be conducted and for him to get further assistance.

Richardson who was sentenced to two years probation was remanded after failing to show for his probation review Thursday.

He cried before the court stating he did not want to go back to the Westgate Correctional Facility.

The court heard that the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute could not facilitate residential treatment for Richardson, but that he was to receive treatment through the facility.

Richardson was sentenced to two-years probation last month after pleading guilty to assaulting a police officer at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital while awaiting a mental health assessment on January 30.

He was also charged with punching his mother in another matter.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe and magistrate Maxanne Anderson who have sat in the matters relating to Richardson have lamented that there was no facility in Bermuda to adequately treat him.

The court heard previously that there were no facilities in Bermuda to accommodate people with a background in crime and drug abuse, and that Richardson may need to get treatment off island.

He was remanded until April 11, but he will come before the court on Thursday, April 4.
