Second teen in custody after bag snatch

A second teenager has been arrested in connection with the theft of a visitor’s handbag that led to a police chase.

A police spokesman said that a 17-year-old boy had been arrested after a 52-year-old Canadian woman had her handbag stolen from her rental scooter basket at Horseshoe Bay last Friday afternoon.

He added that the suspect “remains in police custody at this time pending further inquiries”.

A 15-year-old boy earlier arrested in connection with the incident has been released on police bail.

The spokesman said earlier this week that two suspects on a motorcycle, described as young black males, had approached the woman’s bike from behind and that the pillion passenger had grabbed the bag.

Family members tried to prevent the suspects from escaping, but were unable to stop them.

Police later chased the suspects through Hamilton before the motorcycle they were on crashed into a private car near the Transport Control Department on North Street.

Police have appealed for witnesses.
