Police raid home of prominent lawyer

Police seized items after raiding the property of prominent lawyer Justin Williams.Officers spent several hours on Saturday carrying out a search of Mr Williams’s home on Point Shares Road, in Fairylands, Pembroke, after arriving at about 6.30am.A Bermuda Police Service spokesman said that they had also searched a boat connected to the property during the day. He confirmed that items had been seized.Two police vehicles remained at the home throughout the afternoon.Mr Williams, the founder of Williams Barristers & Attorneys, is a former president of the Bermuda Bar Council.He has served as an acting magistrate, and as chairman of St John Ambulance Bermuda. The lawyer did not respond to requests for comment.Neighbours said he had rarely been seen in recent weeks, and sources said he had been spending time in the United States.Speaking from the scene, Detective Superintendent Nicholas Pedro told the media: “We are executing two warrants: one under the Firearms Act and another under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, otherwise known as Pace, in relation to some ongoing investigations that we are conducting.”Mr Pedro added: “If there is anybody in the neighbourhood that’s aware of anything they would like to speak to us about, they can speak to our Vulnerable Person Unit in confidence.”He said that police were investigating “several matters” and that not all matters dealt with firearms.Mr Pedro added: “We are conducting some inquiries on the premises and have obtained warrants to search for evidence pursuant to those matters that we are investigating. “That’s about all I can say at this point.”He said that no one was currently in police custody. Mr Pedro added: “I won’t say anything more than that.”Mr Williams has been a long-term friend of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife, the lawyer Cherie Booth QC.He has hosted the couple in his Tucker’s Town property, while Mr Blair was photographed by the British press enjoying a fishing trip on Mr Williams’s yacht off Palm Beach in 2007.• On occasion The Royal Gazette may decide to not allow comments on what we consider to be a controversial or contentious story.
