A teenager has been arrested in connection with a daylight shooting in Devonshire.Superintendent Nicholas Pedro said that the suspect, a 17-year-old boy, was arrested on Court Street, Hamilton, on Wednesday night.He remained in custody and was being questioned by detectives yesterday. Police revealed handguns were used in the four gun incidents that took place in the space of 24 hours on Monday.Mr Pedro said: “It’s really important to emphasise that there are a number of handguns that are out there at the moment that are responsible for these crimes. “We’re still actively seeking those and the people that may have them.”The victim of the Devonshire shooting, a 26-year-old man, remained in hospital yesterday. He was shot several times near a bus stop on North Shore Road, between the junctions with Dock Hill and The Glebe Road, at about 2.30pm on Monday. It is understood that the man was hit in both arms and both legs after two men on a motorcycle drove up and opened fire.Mr Pedro said that police were also “actively pursuing” two incidents in the Khyber Heights Road area of Warwick on Monday night, as well as an incident in the Morgan’s Road area earlier that day. He added of the string of incidents: “I think it would be naive to suggest that it’s not gang-related. “What you typically see ... is that these types of incidents are sparked off by sometimes an innocuous incident that results in a retaliatory act. “One of the things we try to do is break that cycle.”He said that police had “significantly beefed up” patrols in the areas affected by the incidents. Mr Pedro added: “We ask that you understand that officers will be actively targeting those we believe to be responsible, and at times there may be some inconvenience to members of the law-abiding public.”Information provided by the public had been “immensely helpful” to police, Mr Pedro said. He added: “We still need a push from people to bring these offenders to justice.” Mr Pedro also announced that another suspect had been arrested in connection with an armed robbery in Washington Mall, Hamilton, on January 29. A 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen property after police searched a Pembroke residence on Wednesday night. Mr Pedro added: “We’re looking at items we recovered from the residence.” Police had previously announced that three men, aged between 19 and 24, had been taken into custody from a Warwick residence in connection with that robbery.
