Alert over fake supermarket offer

A fake website claiming to offer a gift card giveaway from The MarketPlace supermarket chain is a scam, police warned. The site has been “deceiving residents with an alleged $250 gift card giveaway to celebrate an unspecified upcoming anniversary”, a spokesman said. The fraudulent site, which comes with statements from people claiming to have taken part, resembles the MarketPlace site, but has a different website address. The MarketPlace official website is www.marketplace.bm and does not feature a $250 gift card giveaway. The fraudulent offer demands credit card information to cover a $1 “contest entry fee”.Police reminded the public that personal information, including dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, banking and credit card details, should not be passed over the internet, phone or by post to unknown persons.• To report suspected fraud, please contact the Financial Crime Unit on telephone number 247-1757 or via the e-mail address fraud2@bps.bm.
