Double triumph: Rowse, centre, picked up gold and silver in St Lucia

Alyssa Rowse claimed a silver medal in the women’s road race at the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships in St Lucia yesterday.

Rowse, who won Saturday’s women’s time-trial, pushed the pace from the start and was among the lead pack in the second lap of five of the 50 kilometre circuit.

In the final sprint it was again left to Rowse, competing in her first races outside Bermuda, to initiate the effort but she came up short on the line.

Her team-mates Dylan Hill and Kaden Hopkins turned in strong performances in their pre-junior category race, which had a 62 kilometre circuit.

Having made a temporary pact with the Puerto Rican racers to help chase every attempt down, Hill and Hopkins worked the entire race to keep things together for the final push to finish seventeenth and 21st, respectively.

Peter Dunne, the Bermuda Bicycle Association president, said: “The final placings do not properly reflect the work they did in the race but demonstrated that they are certainly strong competitors for this event.”

Hopkins also won his category in the time-trial on Saturday, finishing the ten kilometre course in a time of 15:28sec, 16 seconds ahead of second and third place for an average speed of 38.793kph.

Rowse’s time was 17:13, two minutes ahead of the next rider, with an average speed of 34.85kph.

“The hard work of Kaden and Alyssa this past year paid off in a big way [in the time-trial],” Dunne said.

“It’s extremely satisfying to see them be able to perform at such a high level in this championships and to see the Bermuda flag raised at the medal ceremony.”
